Codex out of credits
The “Codex out of credits” error means the ChatGPT Business workspace connected to Codex does not currently have enough available credits for Codex usage, or a workspace spend limit has stopped additional usage.
What this usually means
- The workspace credit balance is empty or too low: Codex usage in ChatGPT Business uses workspace credits. When the balance is not enough, Codex may be unavailable until credits are added.
- A spend control is blocking usage: Workspace owners can set monthly credit limits by seat type or by individual user. A user-specific limit can override the default seat-level limit.
- Automatic reload is not enabled or has hit its cap: If automatic reload is off, or if a monthly recharge limit has already been reached, the workspace may stop adding credits automatically.
How to fix it
- Ask a ChatGPT Business workspace owner or billing admin to open Workspace settings -> Billing in ChatGPT.
- Check the workspace credit balance and add credits if the balance is low.
- Review any monthly spend controls for Codex seats, standard ChatGPT seats, and the affected user.
- If Codex should keep working without manual top-ups, enable automatic reload and set a minimum balance, target balance, and monthly recharge limit that match the team’s expected usage.
- Retry Codex after the billing or limit change has been applied.
Important note for ChatGPT Business
OpenAI notes that Codex seats are no longer available to new ChatGPT Business plans, or to Business workspaces that had not added a Codex seat before June 24, 2026. Workspaces that already had Codex seats before that date can continue managing usage-based Codex seats.
